Content Providers! Don’t try going too big.

The secret is to dominate your niche. 1% market share is more than enough!

OTT is not a flash in the pan! While we read every day about what the big media players are doing, we never hear the stories of profitable, smaller content providers that have built successful companies targeting small niches.

Here is the data: there are only five properties that have greater than 15% market share in subscriptions (Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, Disney, and Youtube). What are the chances that you are going to be the next one? Almost zero. This is hard even for companies spending hundreds of millions of dollars, such as Quibi or HBO Max.

Your best option: go niche and win your segment.

And this is just fine! Because you can have a financially viable business with less than 1% of the market share because the market is enormous.

As subscription fatigue rises, customers are getting more careful with how they spend their money, especially in an uncertain economy. Our prediction -based on our post-COVID 19 data- is that they will max out on mass media, and they will reduce the number of entertainment properties to which they subscribe, but they’ll keep their “passion” plays.

This important content category is smaller, but this is where the most significant content opportunities remain. The new success stories come from content for dog lovers, meditation for kids, Japanese cuisine, and so on. Customers love these “passion” segments and are loyal, while advertisers pay a premium CPM to reach these really niched viewers.
