Case Study: CurdledTV carves a new segment in horror movies.

How was CurdledTV born?

“This all started because I produce independent horror films. About two years ago, we noticed that companies that showed up in dominating streaming services treated independent filmmakers pretty badly. You get one cent per hour of content viewed, and they would try to find a way to cheat you out of that one cent per hour. And I realized that there was not a place in the internet where you could stream independent horror films.

That’s how we dreamed about CurdledTV: a place that highlights the filmmakers, and also a place where they’re actually going to get paid a decent wage for their creative work. CurdledTV is a streaming service where we combine filmmaking and fandom to create a community where people are going to be benefiting from some of these great titles that are being produced.

How is CurdledTV making use of all of Streann’s features?

“First, there’s live chat. We have a weekly watch party where we bring a director from a film, and he can respond to the audience questions and comments, while we’re all watching it and hearing about how they made the movie.

Also, there are games that we can play: trivia contests and things like that, so the audience actually gets to interact with the content, other than just hitting a like button. So it drives that sense of community when you have to have that ability to engage your viewers.

There’s so much more that you can do with engagement. And that’s where streaming is really helping us achieve our vision of having a community around our content and around filmmakers, because Streann is constantly developing new ways for us to be able to interact and they help us find ways to take something that exists and retool it for our audience. So it’s pretty cool!”

What differentiates you from other horror streaming platforms?

“There’s only one other horror streaming service out there. What sets us apart from them are a couple of things: Number one, they don’t have any interaction in the app, so that’s a big deal. The second thing is kind of what we saw with Quibi. If you’re familiar with the mobile application you know they had all of this great content, but they didn’t release on anything other than mobile phones. This other horror platform is basically the same. Something else that sets us apart is our freemium model, which is 100% ad supported -AVOD, in industry terms.”
