Mobile Streaming Video is now #1.
60% of users now stream video daily on smartphones, tablets, and computers.
Streaming attracted 34.8% of total viewing while cable got 34.4%, a first after months of hitting new viewership highs. Audiences watched an average of 190.9 billion minutes of streamed content per week — easily surpassing the 169.9 billion minutes that audiences watched during the pandemic lockdown.
While streaming continues to grow at the expense of more traditional TV, the market itself is getting more and more cutthroat as the big players vie for market share.
Traditional TV is losing its appeal among audiences — sports events aside — with its inflexible viewing schedule. Sports events are making their way onto streaming services, signaling the impending death knell of traditional TV as we have known it for decades.
“Streaming is working everywhere. It’s definitely the end of traditional TV over the next five, 10 years”, said Gio Punzo, CEO of Streann Media.
The numbers speak for themselves:
- 59% of adult consumers report daily video usage on “non-TV devices” — mainly smartphones, tablets, and computers. This audience share has risen steadily over the last decade.
- Half of adults (50%) watch video on a mobile phone daily on smartphones.
- 51% of adults watch YouTube on a non-TV device daily.
The new generation is entirely mobile.
Not surprisingly, younger individuals are most comfortable with mobile video usage. Among those 18–34, 83% said they watch video daily on a non-TV device.
While non-TV devices provide the ability to watch video anywhere, the most common location for watching video on non-TV devices continues to be in the home. 82% of those who watch video on a mobile phone, and 85% of those who watch video on a tablet, do so at home.
Is your content designed for the mobile era?
This is how Streann can make sure your content fits seamlessly on screen:
- High compatibility with multiple devices
Today, users have lots of devices. When watching content, users continually swap from device to device in different situations. So, it is important to ensure that your design is compatible with a broad range of devices. This will help users to enjoy OTT content whenever they want, from the living room in a large TV set to the couch on an iPad, and on-the-go in their mobile phones.
Content only has meaning when it can be found. Today, we can enjoy massive content on OTT media apps, but this makes it more and more difficult for users to find what they want to watch.
So, OTT media apps should provide an easily navigable interface. To enhance this navigation experience, the following UI/UX considerations should be aware of when designing OTT media apps.
