Which devices should you prioritize if you want to reach the most users with your OTT platform?

Here are a few words of wisdom on getting it right:

1. Go gradual

Naturally, you will want to reach consumers on all the devices of their choice. Ideally, you’d want to be on as many devices as services like Netflix and Amazon Prime, but without a Netflix-sized budget, you’ll need to be more selective.

Start with the basics and grow gradually to the other devices on your hit-list one at a time, rather than trying to go live on all of them at once. Our experience tells us that companies who focus on doing small things well achieve greater success in the long run than those who try to go too big, too soon.

2. Don’t skimp on the essentials

It may seem obvious, but when you’re done creating apps for mobile devices running iOS and Android, don’t forget web browsers.

Users love the flexibility of switching from one device to another and they don’t want to download an app to their laptop or desktop.

Optimizing the UX of your browser experience is just as important as your downloadable apps. And make sure your include casting capability into your mobile apps. Adding support for solutions like Google’s Chromecast and Apple AirPlay into your apps is a quick way to help customers get your content onto some bigger screens.

3. Follow the data

When you’re compiling that list of devices to target, think carefully about which ones will give you the most “bang for your buck” in your target market. The answer will be different for every region, but you can be guided by data on device usage.

4. Look for efficiencies

While following the data is important, the similarities between some platforms mean that you can largely reuse the same code base from one app to expedite launch on a different device.

For example, if you’ve developed for Amazon Fire TV, it’s only a small amount of work to repurpose the code for Smart TVs running Android. Those Smart TVs might only give you a small percentage of the viewers in your market, but if the effort involved is low, it’s a quick win while you’re waiting for the more lengthy development process for an app on a completely different TV platform.

So, whether you are a small player or large, the intention remains the same, and we think it’s the intention that’s most important:

Yes, it can be difficult to be on all those devices and it will take time. But it’ll also be worth it, and your users will thank you for it.
